WALL TORCHES
by Christina Pardy

Items Needed:

1. 3/8 x 3/8 dowel or basswood (cut to 3/4 length)
2. Coffee stirrer straw or for something sturdier 1/8" brass
hollow rod (hobby supply or train set stores)
3. Pony Beads ( black )
4. small 1/8" beads
5. Hot Glue
6. Cheap stained glass paint (flame colors or red yellow
   and orange sharpies)
7. Cone shaped filigree metal findings for beads (these I hade to buy big crystals with the finding on the top and detach them, Michaels or AC Moores didn't carry them separately)
8. Black acrylic paint

Instructions:

1. Take the 3/4" wood block. 1/8" from the edge drill a 1/8 hole through block. Drill this at a diagonal so that on the bottom the bit comes through 1/4 in from the edge of the block.

2. The end with the hole 1/8" in is the top-front. With an Xacto blade (being careful) carve the front from the square in the back to a circle in the front. You may want to try a Dremel with a rough sanding bit, though I think the carved - rough hewn look looks better for a medieval torch.

3. Stain wood

4. Cut straw at about 1 3/4" - 2" and stick through hole drilled in wood.

5. Glue small bead to bottom of straw. Push straw down so that it is almost flush with the back of the
wood piece.

6. Slide 1 pony bead over the part of the straw sticking out of the top of the piece of wood. If straw will not fit cut a slice in the top of the straw so that it condenses to fit it through the bead. Cut the remaining of the straw off to the top of the bead.

7. Glue Jewelry finding to pony bead

8. Make flame: Take small red or orange bead, and cover with hot glue ... as glue cools pull up to where you want the tip of the flame to be. (Be careful.. It's a little hot and will take practice) Between each layer put on stain glass paint or sharpie when you add the second layer of glue to build up the color will melt into the glue. Do this layering several time until you get the flame you want. The flame is optional if you don't want it.

9. Glue flame, tip up into jewelry finding.
