Happy New Year to all!  I hope that everyone had a most wonderful and safe holiday season.

With the entry of 2008 comes a new year filled with new mini projects and I've been witness to a wonderful one that is currently coming to life; right in our very own forum community!  The same artist that created Muddy End (featured below) is also working on the most delightful Alice in Wonderland vignette.  It's so wonderful to see this project evolve and the detailing is out of this world.  If you're not already a member of the ATM forum community, I extend you a heartfelt invite so that you can see for yourself the wonders of this project.

Also starting in the new year is the prototype development of the next Heritage Doll Homes kit!  Off the design table for several months now, the Eastlake Estate is coming to life!  As our "flagship" kit, it's designed to impress even the most discriminating collector; without breaking the bank.  Once the prototype is finished and all the design kinks ironed out, this wonderful kit will debut.  Please watch for our first of many newsletters to go out later this Spring if you've already signed up.  If not, just send us an email asking to be put on the newsletter list (please use "Newsletter" in the subject line).

With all that said, I sign off for now and wish each and every one of you a most creative and prosperous New Year!

Insurance for Your Miniatures Collection

There are many renters and homeowners policies out there that will cover your miniatures collection, however, depending on your insurance company, you may need additional coverage to ensure your collection is suitably protected.  It is always a good idea to document your entire miniatures collection with a list of items; including photos or even a video tape.  Receipts for high valued items are also a good idea.  Check with your insurance company for their specific requirements for covering your collection.  Some companies may require an appraisal if any items in your collection have appreciated in value since their purchase.  A miniatures museum is a great starting point in acquiring an appraisal of your collection!

If your collection is so large and/or valuable that your standard renters or homeowners insurance coverage will not suffice, there are several companies specializing in insuring collectibles and it's possible your existing policy holder may be able to recommend one.

There is a company that offers insurance coverage just for miniatures collections:

AMERICAN
COLLECTORS
INSURANCE

When you get there, just click on Collectibles to find out about insuring your treasured collection!

Mini Hints & Tips

For attaching your mini artwork to the walls of your dollhouse, use two whole (or part of) male and female adhesive Velcro "spots".  These can be obtained in many fabric stores.

?

Fill pillows and cushions with dry tapioca ball.  On beds and chairs, they will "flop" naturally and look beautiful.

?

For naturally draped table coverings, wrap your table tightly in cling wrap.  Spray the backside of your tablecloth or runner with hairspray or spray starch until wet and place on table over cling wrap, shaping the fabric with your fingers while using a hair dryer on low setting to dry it.  Once dry, remove fabric from table and then take off cling wrap.  Replace table cloth and Voila!

?

Leftover wallpaper scraps make beautiful liners for the drawers of your mini furniture

?

Real life textured wallpaper often comes in small enough patterns to be used in miniatures projects in 1:12 scale; specifically...beautiful decorated ceilings!

Minis on the Move
Lisa Neault

From the kitchen table, to the picnic table, miniaturists are on the move!

Back in October, I strapped on my seat belt in the van with Chris, and took off for Tyson's Corner show in McLean, Va. The show would be held that Sunday, October 14, 2007 at the Crowne Plaza and we would be debuting the 1st kit in the All Things Mini Heritage Doll Homes line - the Victorian Retreat.

The Victorian Retreat

This is one of my favorite shows to do during my show schedule. Run by Molly Cromwell, of  www.mollycromwell.com, the Tyson's corner show will soon be 25 years old this year in 2008. Besides being about 2 hours away from my home, it is easy to travel to, and a lot of fun with the different dealers who are there year after year.

We arrived on Saturday afternoon, in time to unload items in our room, and get dressed for Molly's dinner with the dealers.  Many workshop attendees were there, and we all had dinner at different tables in the local restaurant, that had excellent food. Molly sat two lovely ladies with us at our table, who were there for the first time attending a miniature show. These lovely ladies were from Danville, Va.  We had the most fun time speaking of miniatures, Ebay, the kits, and in general, doing what Chris and I love best - meeting new people.

I cannot tell you the excitement when we debuted our prototype.  We also had flyers out for the 2nd kit in the series, the Southwest Bungalow, and before the end of the show all the flyers we had prepared were taken by customers.

We sold a lot of stock, and I bought a beautiful dressed mannequin for my vintage dollhouse Tara. I met a lot of the new dealers, and had fun speaking with friends who I only get to converse with online, and who attended the show.

The show was very successful, and it caused me to reflect this past holiday on how far All Things Mini as a forum and community of miniaturists have come. From meeting on Dollhouse Miniatures forum, to a message board, to what we know now as All Things Mini forum, then the production of King William Miniatures (my company) manufacturing the All Things Mini Heritage Doll Homes kit line.  You could say in that old line of that old ad from the 70's..."We've come a Long Way, Baby!"  When I think of how far All Things Mini has spread her wings, it's truly amazing. We have had some wonderful artists do online tutorials, participate in our online chats: Rik Pierce, Millie and Ferd Sobol, to name a few. It also caused me to reflect how miniaturists, whether  beginning collectors, or guilded artisans, are so willing to share their experiences, finds, and collections with one another. Marie and I first met online at the Dollhouse Miniatures forum before the magazine was sold by Kalmbach to Madavor Media.  With the beginning year, I find myself looking at a whole new world of possibilities, and most of these in miniature. (My resolutions for 2008, are not in miniature, alas!)  The year 2007 was completely a year of new dollhouses, the Victorian Retreat, the Southwest bungalow.  Chris and I completed a huge dollhouse for a Christmas present in time for Christmas Eve delivery - and the artistry of working together so closely caused us to think on more commissions and 'specialty' pieces for the year 2008.

Look for more of the next kit, the Eastlake, this year! And be sure to buckle up with me again, and visit Maryland State Day for the debut of the Southwest Bungalow. This will be on April 18-19, 2008, in Westminster, Maryland!

Miniatures speak is plentiful and the members also pride themselves on the virtual fantasy world in which they dwell inside castle walls, consorting with dragons and mischievous mascots running amok!  World Domination is the name of the game and you'll find many interesting people in this group; for instance, Granny Rat who lives in an egg!

Membership is by invitation only from Noni the Great Oz as there is a limit on active members to keep the group more like a "family" environment.   Interested parties can send a request to join the community to Noni by visiting http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheGSOLFOTClub/.
